Chromebook Startup and Troubleshooting

Intro to Chromebook.mp4

Start your Chromebook

Before we begin exploring your new Chromebook, we need to change your password

  • Allow your Chromebook to finish turning on and you can see the sign in screen

Change Your Password

  • In the bottom left corner of the sign-on screen, click on the Apps button and select CTC Password Reset

  • You will need to enter your Username and Password once the Reset loads

    • Your Username is your first and last name without a space i.e. johndoe

    • Your Password is your student ID number, located on your schedule

  • Once logged in, you will click reset password

    • Your password must contain an Uppercase, Lowercase, number and/or symbol

    • Your password must be at least ten (10) characters long

    • Your password cannot contain your name or consecutive numbers (1234)

    • These requirements are listed on the password reset screen as well

    • Suggestions for creating a strong password are:

      • Combine two or three of your favorite things such as color and animal

        • Bluepandaorange1 is a good example password - DON’T USE THIS

  • Once you have chosen a password you won’t forget and meets the criteria, click change password

  • If you are returned to the change password screen, there was an error in the system and you will need to restart the process by turning off your Chromebook and starting again

  • If you see a progress bar and the system says it is complete, restart your Chromebook by holding down the power button

How-to-Login

  • Once you are on the login screen, enter your Username and NEW Password

    • As mentioned before, your Username is your first and last name (@students.scctc.org should be automatically added to your username)

Now you can explore your Chromebook

  • After you have logged in, give the Chromebook some time to load in all the apps we have pre-assigned to your profile

    • This will only happen the first time you log into a different Chromebook

  • Take some time to explore your new Chromebook

    • Make sure you look at Gmail - CHECK THIS DAILY

    • Get familiar with Google Drive and Classroom - You will use these daily

  • You can bookmark websites by clicking on the star in the address bar on the right side

  • Clicking on the clock in the lower right corner brings up a menu with important features

    • Settings can be changed by clicking on the gear icon

    • Connect your Chromebook to your home wifi network by clicking the Wifi button

  • Closing the lid of your Chromebook puts it to sleep but does not restart or shutdown

    • It is a good idea to restart your Chromebook once a week, to keep errors low

Don’t forget, if you complete your CTC program, you will earn your Chromebook, so make sure you keep it in good condition!

Google Apps and the Waffle

In the top right corner of any New Tab, or within any Google app, is the Google Waffle. The icon looks like a waffle, or a 3x3 grid of dots. This is where you will find all of your Google apps, such as, Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc. You can use it to quickly switch between apps on the fly. If you open a Google app from a New Tab, the app will just open. If you open a Google app from within another Google app, the new app will open in a new tab and leave your old one alone. Also, you can rearrange the icons within the Waffle, so you can organize it however you like.

Troubleshooting

If you are having trouble getting websites to load or certain parts of websites to load, try clearing your browsing data.

  • Hold Ctrl+H to open your History

  • Click on Clear Browsing Data on the left side

  • Once the Clear Browsing Data screen opens, make sure you are on the Basic tab at the top

    • Make sure the Time Range is set to All Time

    • Make sure the Cookies and Cached options are checked, the Browsing History option does not need checked

  • Once you have set the options above, click Clear Data in the lower right corner

Restart your Chromebook

  • Closing the lid on your Chromebook only puts it to sleep and does not restart or shut it down

  • It is important to restart or shut down your Chromebook once a week, just to clear out any errors or resolve issues

    • Holding down the power button until it turns off is a good way to shut down your Chromebook, then just press (not hold) the power button to turn your Chromebook back on

    • You can restart it by holding down the Refresh button (the spinning arrow above the 4 key) then press the power button, then let go

      • This will quickly shut down and turn on your Chromebook, which is a great way to quickly clear out errors
